Why does GRP become so popular? First of all, because of its technical characteristics. Namely – due to the high level of strength. And it is achieved only by the technology of applying a glass fiber to the plastic base. And this fiber itself gives such indestructibility that even the metal will envy. But any form of fiberglass of the same size and thickness is several times lighter than metal. It is known that the automotive crash tests of the leadership palm turned out all the same for a lighter and stronger participant – glass-filled plastic.
In order to use this material as a decorative element, it is given some changes in the properties. Various resins are introduced into GRP, which give it the ability not to react with most chemicals and be refractory. To obtain the desired characteristics, the following methods are used:
– The use of gel coat – a special protective coating in the process of product formation;
– Adding tinting mixtures to the resin;
– Use of glass wool;
– Creating a relief matrix for molding.
Gel coat – is, in its essence, a resin protective coating, only slightly modified for decorative purposes. If the gel coat is of high quality, then it will have a stable level of resistance to external aggressive influences, including chemical reagents, ultraviolet, and moisture. Perhaps its production of any desired color or shade. In the process of manufacturing the part, the gel coat layer falls first on the matrix, and when the finished product is removed, the coating naturally appears on the front side of the element.
If you want to paint fiberglass not only on top, but on the entire thickness, then in the resin, which impregnates the glass fiber, special coloring pastes are introduced. By the way, their palette is also quite extensive.
But decorative glass wool is a very thin glass fabric, on which the necessary decorative texture is applied. For example, the texture of wood or natural stone. Then the glass vial is placed between the gelcoat and the remaining layers of the glass fiber.
It is quite possible to produce the matrix itself with the desired relief or pattern. And the fiberglass form will completely repeat its shape.
Decorative articles made of fiberglass
The use of glass-filled plastic in the finishing area is quite wide. From it, it is possible to make such items as bas-reliefs, columns and sculptures, finishing panels with various imitating natural materials surfaces, decorative consoles and beams, semi-columns, landscape details (stones, slides, etc.).
And we cannot ignore, perhaps, the main advantage of using fiberglass material. They are the absolute simplicity and cheapness of the process of manufacturing products absolutely different in the way they are used. There is no need for complicated and expensive equipment, big economic costs, because the production does not need expensive components. All operations do not require any highly specialized knowledge and skills and take a little time.
